TOUR – Belgrade River Cruise
DAY 5 KRUŠEDOL/ SREMSKI
KARLOVCI/ NOVI SAD
Breakfast.
Departure from Belgrade at 9am. On the way to our first stop in Monastery Krušedol,
you will enjoy the colourful landscapes of the Pannonian Plain whilst listening
stories about the turbulent history of this area. Once
reached Fruška Gora region, we will visit the most important
of total 16 medieval Orthodox monasteries nested in this region, the famous
Serb Orthodox Monastery of Krušedol. Established
in the early 16th century by the last dynasty of medieval
Serbia, the Branković family, for centuries it served as a burial church for
the most illustrious Serbs of the Habsburg Empire - patriarchs, dukes and even
an exiled king. Inside the monastery church you will see a stunning late medieval iconostasis and
beautiful frescoes but,
most what is even more important, experience the feeling of past times and of
Orthodox Christian monasticism.
Our next stop, just a few minutes
away from Krusedol Monastery, is a small historic town Sremski Karlovci known for its baroque
churches and excellent wine. Today quiet and provincial, for over two centuries
the town has been an unofficial capital of Serbs in the Habsburg Empire and as a
result the town centre boasts several nice palaces and churches, including the
Four Lion Fountain, the Karlovci Gymnasium, town hall, Roman Catholic Church,
the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas and more.
Speaking about the wine, non-Muslim
guests will have a great chance to taste the trademark of Sremski
Karlovci - Bermet – the wine prepared with herbal remedies. The
quality of the wine produced in this area here is so high that, back in the
time of the Austrian and Hungarian Empire, the Viennese Court released the
winegrowers of Sremski Karlovci from compulsory military service so that they
could keep on producing wine. You will be given an opportunity to taste 7 types
of wine.
For our Muslim guests, instead
of wine tastings, we organize Museum of Honey and Bee-keeping visit including
tasting of one of the best honey and honey products in Serbia and region. Moreover,
all guests will taste local cheese, olives and bread.
Just a few minutes’ drive away
from Sremski Karlovci we will reach the famous Petrovaradin
Fortress,
one of the largest strongholds in Europe still preserved and called "Gibraltar on the Danube”.
Built by the Austrian Empire during the 17th and 18th
centuries, this fortress played a significant role in defending the middle
European countries from Ottoman attacks. Leisure time to enjoy breath-taking
views over the river and Novi Sad.
Our
last sight today is Novi Sad. It is the second largest city in Serbia and
thanks to its typical Central European appearance and proud history of being a
cultural and intellectual centre in the Austro-Hungarian Empire it was given a nickname
- the Serbian Athens. Today it hosts
the largest south-east Europe's music festival – EXIT of a global reputation.
The
Square of Liberty will be our starting point to explore Novi Sad as it is
surrounded by some of the prettiest as well as the most important buildings of
this town - the imposing Catholic
church, the grandiose City Hall, the Iron Man Building, historical hotels Meyer
and Vojvodina – who will tell you stories about the past and present of this
area. By
walking along famous streets Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska you will have the feeling
of being back in the 18th and 19th centuries, admiring
architecture of that time as well as endless rows of cafes and restaurants. Leisure
time for lunch and shopping.
